JOB TITLE:  Housekeeper
DEPARTMENT:  Operations and Maintenance
REPORTS TO:  Maintenance Supervisor and Director of Capital Projects

New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

JOB SUMMARY:  The Housekeeper position is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the New-York Historical Society offices and restrooms. This includes cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, and more.

This position is a part-time position that is scheduled to work from 7 PM – 11 PM, Monday through Friday.

EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or GED preferred.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 2 years’ housekeeping experienced required.  Knowledge of cleaning techniques and sanitation products required.   Must be customer focused, reliable, organized and adaptable.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Clean restrooms including basins, toilets, mirrors, fixtures, fittings and floors.
  • Clean offices including dusting surfaces, window sills and file cabinets.
  • Vacuum and mop floors as directed.
  • Empty and clean trash containers in the offices and bathrooms.
  • Restock bathroom supplies when necessary.
  • Maintain all cleaning equipment and materials.
  • Report all maintenance issues and safety hazards.
  • Perform additional duties as requested.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

The Housekeeping requirements involve moderate to heavy work. There is a frequent need to stand, stoop, push, pull, walk, bend and lift objects up to 15 pounds.
