Explore New York history and discover techniques to find your own family’s history. The New-York Historical Society and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society invite you to attend a joint program that explores some of New York’s historical documents and teaches techniques for family history research. 

In this program you will learn some historical context and then learn skills to improve your family history exploration—all in a one afternoon. Advance registration required

This event is co-sponsored by the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and is meant as an overview for beginners. Tickets are $50 per person, and $40 for N-YHS members.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

2–3 pm
Research in the Library: Learn how to conduct genealogical research in the special collections at the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library at New-York Historical! Guided by an experienced reference librarian, learn about the vast collections at our esteemed research library as well as how to register and conduct research of your own and how to locate and contextualize primary and secondary resources.

3–4 pm
Ten Tips for Exploring Your Family’s History: You’ve gotten inspired by the New-York Historical’ s collection and learned how to access our resources—so what’s next? In the family history experience you learn 10 essential steps to discover your family’s story from a New York Genealogical and Biographical Society expert.

This comprehensive experience is ideal for those who are just starting their own research.
