Honeybee Hotel: A Brief History of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and Garden

The 2018 nonfiction book Honeybee Hotel begins over 100 years ago with the Astor family and the birth of the iconic Manhattan landmark, the Waldorf Astoria. Fast-forward to the turn of the 21st century and meet executive chef David Garcelon, who had a unique vision to restore the hotel’s rooftop garden, including six hives containing some 300,000 honeybees. Log on and join the book’s author Leslie Day, an urban naturalist, as she discusses the garden’s development, the Waldorf’s change of ownership, and the reasons nature can thrive in the ultimate urban environment.
In addition to Honeybee Hotel, Leslie Day is also the author of Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City, Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City, and Field Guide to the Neighborhood Birds of New York City. Leslie is presently working on her fifth book, River: Living on the Hudson, A Natural History. Leslie has a doctorate in science education from Columbia University Teachers College and taught middle school science. Now retired, she teaches Introduction to Plant Science at the New York Botanical Garden and gives talks and leads nature walks for Fort Tryon Park Trust, and many organizations in and around the city.
