Presented live on Zoom
The story of New York’s beginnings in the Dutch colony of New Netherland is inaccessible to all but a few experts who are skilled in the Dutch language of the 17th century. Scholar Jaap Jacobs, currently working on a Society of Daughters of Holland Dames funded translation project, will join Russell Shorto to share his knowledge. Join us as they talk about the work of translating these documents, new information yet to be uncovered, and Petrus Stuyvesant, who Jacobs is researching for his upcoming biography.
Russell Shorto is the bestselling author of The Island at the Center of the World, Amsterdam, and Revolution Song. He is the director of the New Amsterdam Project at the New-York Historical Society.
Jaap Jacobs (PhD Leiden, 1999) is affiliated with the University of St Andrews. He specializes in early American history, specifically the Dutch in the Americas in the early modern period. He has taught at Leiden University, the University of Amsterdam, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, and the University of St Andrews. He is currently working on a biography of Petrus Stuyvesant.
Jacobs’ translation project is supported by the generosity of the Society of Daughters of Holland Dames.
