Abraham Bancker (1760–1832)

Letter to Evert Bancker (1721–1803), p. 1

Staten Island, September 23, 1787
New-York Historical Society Library, Department of Manuscripts, Bancker Papers

This is one of the earliest letters to comment on the Constitution. Abraham Bancker (1760–1832) represented Richmond County (Staten Island) in the Assembly and in the Ratifying Convention. He approves of the Constitution, which he likens to the British constitution and the New York constitution. Many Americans admired the British constitution and most New Yorkers approved of the state constitution of 1777.
