This eighteenth-century horse-drawn coach was considered the height of luxury and, indeed, by the 1760s there were only twenty-six enclosed coaches in all of New York. It was owned by merchant James Beekman (1732–1807) who acquired it in 1771. George Washington is reported to have ridden in it during the first Congressional session.
