"Publius" (John Jay)

Draft of The Federalist No. 64, ca. 1788, p. 1

New-York Historical Society Library, Department of Manuscripts, John Jay Papers

This draft of The Federalist No. 64 is one of only four manuscript drafts in existence for any of the essays. The essays were written so fast that authors hardly had time to read over their work, and the drafts were probably given to the printers and were lost. This draft (and three other Jay drafts) has so many corrections, however, that Jay probably gave a clean copy to give to the printer and retained this messy draft. In fact, this may be two drafts of the same essay. The draft was given to the New-York Historical Society by the Jay family in 1863.
