New York Federal Republican Committee Circular Letters, April 6–22, 1788

New-York Historical Society Library, Lamb Papers

Federalists and Antifederalists vigorously campaigned to elect delegates to the New York Convention. They published tickets of candidates in the newspapers and distributed campaign literature. Here, Antifederalists are distributing one pamphlet, which was reprinted in New York, by "A Columbian Patriot" (Mercy Otis Warren of Massachusetts), and another pamphlet anthology that contained several Antifederalist items: nine Pennsylvania essays by "Centinel" (Samuel Bryan of Pennsylvania) and the "Dissent of the Minority of the Pennsylvania Convention," as well as a letter by Virginia Governor Edmund Randolph explaining why he refused to sign the Constitution as a delegate to the Philadelphia Convention.
