New York Journal

New York, October 18, 1787
New-York Historical Society Library

This is the first of 16 essays by "Brutus," which appeared in the New York Journal between October 18, 1787, and April 10, 1788. The "Brutus" essays contain excellent arguments against the Constitution, especially the federal judiciary. The authorship is uncertain, but one good possibility is Melancton Smith of New York City, a wealthy merchant, a close ally of Governor Clinton, and a statewide leader of the Antifederalists during the election of and the sessions of the New York Convention.
