This picture shows the Tontine Coffee House, which dates from 1792, and, across the street, the Merchants' Coffee House. The coffee house and the tavern were important meeting places for workers and professionals and for political groups. The Merchants' Coffee House was used extensively by Federalists in 1787–88.
