As president of the Philadelphia Convention in 1787, George Washington (1722–99) gave the Constitution a legitimacy and a prestige it would not have had otherwise. Elected president of the United States in 1789 and again in 1792 with the unanimous vote of the Electors, Washington retired in 1797.
