JOB TITLE: Visitor Services Associate (Part-Time)

The New-York Historical Society, a preeminent educational and research institution, is home to both New York City’s oldest museum and to one of the nation’s most distinguished independent research libraries. N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the nation’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.
 

The New-York Historical Society is seeking part-time Visitor Services Associates for its Visitor Services department. Visitor Services Associates staff New-York Historical’s admissions and membership desk, coat check, auditorium, switchboard and call center in addition to other related tasks. Candidates must be available to work at least one weekend day per week plus availability to work on holidays when the museum is open to the public. This role is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New-York Historical and Local 2110, UAW. 

Sells museum admissions and memberships to visitors; 

Accurately maintains a cash drawer during their shift;  

Assists and answers questions from visitors; 

Helps explain and enforce health and safety procedures; 

Processes visiting guests who have meetings with staff;

Answers the main switchboard phone and accurately transfers calls;  

Distributes assistive listening devices and other exhibition aids related to ADA accessibility;

High School diploma or GED required;  Associates or Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred;

1 year customer service/cashier experience, preferably in a museum/arts setting; 

High level of verbal communication skills;

Ability to interact with customers, coworkers and vendors in a personable and engaging manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee with or without accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

The employee may be required to stand or sit for extended periods of time and lift objects over their head.

COMPENSATION: The pay rate for this position is $19/hour.

Candidates must be available to work on alternating Wednesdays from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Fridays from 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Sundays from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM, and holidays when the museum is open to the public. Occasionally, shift hours will be adjusted to allow for coverage of sales to New-York Historical’s Public Programs series. This role is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between New-York Historical and Local 2110, UAW. 

Support the museum’s fundraising efforts through the sale of new and renewal museum memberships at the Membership Desk

Serve as the main point of contact for all current and potential members visiting the museum and foster positive member relations

Handle membership admissions/overflow of general admissions as needed

Handle on-site ticket sales at some New-York Historical Public Programs

Visitor Services Associate (Full-Time)

JOB TITLE: Associate Museum Conservator
DEPARTMENT: Collections
REPORTS TO: Deputy Museum Director

N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs and fostering research that reveals the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

The New-York Historical Society seeks applicants with a strong background in painting conservation for the full-time position of Associate Museum Conservator. The Associate Conservator oversees the care of the New-York Historical painting collection, including technical examinations, research, and treatment, as well preventive care for the entire museum collection of more than 70,000 works of art and historical artifacts. The Associate Museum Conservator also supervises consulting conservators for objects, sculpture, textiles, and other collection areas, and works closely with other New-York Historical conservation staff including the Conservator for Loans and Exhibitions, who oversees care and treatment of works on paper in the museum collection, and the Chief Library Conservator. The Associate Conservator will work primarily within the conservation lab at an offsite location.

Responsible for the preservation, examination, documentation, and treatment of New-York Historical’s paintings collection in accordance with the AIC code of ethics. This includes examination reports with media and support descriptions; assessment of artists' techniques; assessment of condition; determination of requirements for handling, storage, exhibition, and travel; and preparation of treatment proposals and reports.

Examines works requested for loan from New-York Historical in consultation with other conservators, as appropriate, and makes recommendations for packing, shipping, and handling of loans. In consultation with exhibition registrars, examines incoming loans of paintings and prepares related documentation. 

Supervises consulting conservators in the areas of objects, sculpture, textile, and costume, including review of condition reports, treatment proposals, and final reports.

Monitors temperature and relative humidity and oversees integrated pest management in museum exhibition galleries and storage spaces, and works with the Operations Department to make adjustments as needed.

Maintains all conservation documentation pertaining to the New-York Historical museum collection and works with the collections database administrator to link conservation records and images with object records in TMS (The Museum System).

Collaborates with New-York Historical conservators, curators, collections staff, and exhibition designers on a range of matters including acquisitions, exhibitions, and storage.

Maintains the off-site museum painting conservation facility and equipment and orders conservation supplies.

Serves as a courier for museum objects, as needed.

Gives presentations about conservation to donors, students, or other groups, as needed.

Maintains clear communication with New-York Historical colleagues about ongoing museum conservation priorities, goals, and projects.

Master’s degree from a recognized conservation training program with a minimum of three years of post-graduate experience or commensurate qualification. 

Proven expertise in the treatment and preservation of paintings, preferably with experience treating 18th and 19th century paintings. 

Broad knowledge of museum practices and collections management.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects with tight deadlines.

This position requires the ability to stand for hours at a time, lift up to 30 pounds, and work in an environment which includes exposure to materials containing possible contaminants.

Associate Museum Conservator

JOB TITLE: Exhibition Preparator
DEPARTMENT: Exhibitions
REPORTS TO: Production Supervisor and Director of Exhibitions

N-YHS is dedicated to presenting exhibitions and public programs, and fostering research that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, its holdings cover four centuries of American history, and include one of the world’s greatest collections of books, manuscripts, graphic materials, historical artifacts, and American art documenting the history of the United States as seen through the prism of New York.

New-York Historical Society Exhibition Preparators report to the Production Supervisor and Director of Exhibitions, and are responsible for all aspects of in-house exhibit preparation and fabrication including installation, de-installation, maintenance, and lighting.  Exhibition Preparators work closely with the Design department, Collections department, Conservation, and other departments within the organization.

This position observes a 35-hour work week Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM, with occasional evenings and weekends, as projects require.

Fabricate, paint, and install exhibition display furniture and casework.

Maintain woodshop tools, keep shop organized, and clean shop at end of each day.

Install and maintain exhibition lighting, and maintain lighting storage area.

Maintain and repair exhibitions in all galleries and conduct routine exhibition inspection.

Order necessary exhibition materials and supplies.

Mount making for historic objects and artifacts.

Additional responsibilities and duties as required.

Run up and down stairs, comfortable working on ladders, and physical agility in tight spaces.

Must be a team player, troubleshooter, and collaborative problem solver.

Experience with carpentry, painting, and lighting.

Ability to safely use table saw, chop saw, router, drill press, band-saw, and hand tools.

Must be comfortable driving and working on genie lift up to 20’ above floor.

Knowledge of light fixtures and lenses, fiber optic lighting systems, and basic electrical skills.

Art Handling experience: ability to work around, move, install, and handle artwork and artifacts.

Model making, mount making (silver soldering brass), drawing, and painting skills are preferred.

Experience with Vectorworks is preferred.

Work involves moderate to heavy work. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, and lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.

COMPENSATION: The salary range for this position is $40-$45k.
